STURBRIDGE, Mass., May 23, 2012 — Photonis USA has announced a high-mass bipolar matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight (Maldi-Tof) detector that the company says improves the detection efficiency of high-mass ions with less complexity compared to other high-mass Maldi-Tof detectors.

It features a 250 mm2 collection area, which allows for higher sensitivities without the need for higher post-acceleration voltage. The detector comprises a high-sensitivity microchannel plate, a high-speed scintillator and a photomultiplier that detects positive and negative ions with 30-kV isolation. A gridless optic system provides high-sensitivity detection for masses in excess of 100 kDa.

The compact shape and simplified detection system support many high-mass operating modes without the need to manipulate the detector through the ion beam.
