TAMPERE, Finland, June 2, 2011 — For industrial, display and medical applications, Modulight Inc. has added multichip red laser modules to its family of FiberLight products.

They fill in the gap between the butterfly packaged single emitters and fiber-coupled laser arrays already represented in the FiberLight line. The laser modules can host up to four laser diodes coupled to a single 200-µm core fiber with a numerical aperture of 0.22 and terminated with a standard SMA-905 connector. A typical configuration includes a thermistor and a thermoelectrically cooled element for temperature control, and a photodiode for power monitoring.
They are available in three- and four-chip versions, at wavelengths of 635, 650, 670 and 680 nm. Power levels range from 1 to 3 W, and other wavelengths and power levels are available upon request.
The company says that the single-emitter approach is preferable to the array approach in terms of better heat management, a higher power per emitter and higher brightness. The laser diodes are wired in series, resulting in a low operating current.
