Hamamatsu Photonics UK Ltd. has introduced the L10762 resonant
cavity LED for plastic optical fiber (POF) data communications. The company says
that the red-emitting resonant cavity LED offers seven times the fiber end output
power compared to conventional types. This is achieved by bonding a microball lens
to the LED chip surface, greatly increasing the coupling efficiency to optical fibers
by focusing the emitted light into the fiber. The increase in fiber end output power,
the high-speed response of 70 MHz for a —3 dB drop in signal, and the 660-nm emitting
wavelength make the LED suitable for use in POF data communications networks. Features
include reverse voltage of 3 V, forward current of 50 mA, pulsed forward current
of 80 mA and an operating temperature range of —30 to 85 °C. Typical fiber
end output is 1 mW, typical forward voltage is 1.9 V, and maximum reverse current
is 10 μA.
