WESTFORD, Mass., June 8 2006 --Barr Associates Inc., a manufacturer of precision thin-film coatings and optical filters, has introduced an 18-element multispectral filter microarray. The company said each element is a high-precision thin-film filter only 0.032 mms wide.

barrassocs.jpg"A key driver of the development of filter arrays was the desire to reduce mass, power and volume in multispectral sensors through the elimination of a filter wheel," the company said in a statement. "The main advantage of the new microarray technology is the increased number of spectral bands, which can be accommodated in a smaller volume, and their compatibility with higher-resolution detector arrays."

These new microarrays may be designed and built for use with any focal plane array detector, from ultraviolet to long-wave infrared wavelength ranges, the company said. Potential applications include commercial colorimetry and space-based multispectral imaging.

"The newly developed microarrays will provide a very rugged, high-performance alternative to linear variable filters or diffraction gratings," said Kevin Downing, product line manager of the Arrays Product Line at Barr.
