coverslip

A coverslip, also known as a cover glass or cover slip, is a thin and flat piece of transparent material typically made of glass or plastic. It is used in microscopy to cover a specimen mounted on a microscope slide. 

The primary purpose of a coverslip is to protect the specimen from damage, contamination, and evaporation, while also providing a flat surface for imaging. By placing a coverslip over the specimen, it helps to maintain the integrity of the sample and prevents it from being disturbed during observation under a microscope.

Coverslips are available in various sizes and thicknesses to accommodate different types of microscopy techniques and objectives. They are essential components in light microscopy, fluorescence microscopy, phase-contrast microscopy, and other microscopic imaging methods, allowing researchers and scientists to examine specimens with high clarity and precision.
