In 1977, Dale Flaming, a scientist working at the University of California at San Francisco, was having difficulty reliably producing micropipettes. He developed the first electronically controlled micropipette puller to facilitate his research. Demand for additional pullers from colleagues prompted the formation of Sutter Instrument Company. Since then, our product portfolio has grown to include amplifiers, microscopes, micromanipulators, and imaging products. Dale remains the active CEO of the company to this day.

Manufacturer of precision instrumentation for scientific research and industrial OEM. Perform in vivo and in vitro advanced optical experiments using the MOM multi-photon resonant scanning microscope, BOB open-design upright scope, or SOM simple moving microscope. Other products include dPatch®, IPA, X-Y translation systems, motorized stages, light sources (LED, Xenon and plasma), the SmartShutter, high speed wavelength switchers and filter wheels.  Suitable for 2P, SHG, pulsed laser, optogenetics, ratiometric and hyperspectral imaging.

As the world leader in micropipette fabrication technology, our advanced instrumentation is essential to biomedical research and emerging analytical techniques that utilize sub-micron probes and pipettes. Innovations in puller design include sophisticated velocity sensing circuitry to maximize reproducibility, and the laser-based P-2000 puller capable of pulling fused silica and NSOM tips.

We've combined extensive years of motor control experience and in-house precision CNC machined parts to create a line of robust and versatile optical products to serve the tremendous growth in photonics, optical research, and imaging techniques.

Our expertise in electromechanical engineering and stepper-motor control is evident in the submicron resolution of our highly stable motorized and mechanical micromanipulators. Whether your application requires the extensive programmable capabilities of the MP-285, the multiple manipulator control of the MPC-200, a dedicated diagonal axis such as the TRIO-235 or a 4-axis manipulator such as the QUAD, we provide the total control that is essential to your research.
